Verdict is built around a single principle: your photos never leave your device. This policy explains what that means in practice, on iPhone (iOS) and on Android.
What we collect
Nothing. Verdict does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data, photo content, metadata, analytics, crash logs, or usage telemetry to any server we control. There is no account, no signup, no profile, and no advertising.
Verdict is entirely free. There is no in-app purchase and no subscription, so the app never handles any payment or purchase information.
What stays on your device
- Sorting decisions: which photos you marked as keep / discard / hold are stored locally on your device (UserDefaults on iOS, the app's private storage on Android).
- Pending deletions: on iOS, Verdict creates two albums ("Verdict To Delete" and "Verdict Held") inside your Photos library to track your decisions until you confirm them. On Android, the same lists are kept in the app's private storage, and no album is created.
- Duplicate fingerprints: visual fingerprints used to spot near identical photos are computed on your device (with Apple's Vision framework on iOS) and cached locally so analysis can resume across launches.
- Statistics: cumulative counts of photos sorted / deleted / held, last activity timestamp, daily activity log, storage freed. All stored locally.
None of this is uploaded anywhere. Uninstalling Verdict removes it.
Network access
Verdict does not send anything to us or to any third party.
- iOS, iCloud Photos: if your library uses "Optimise iPhone Storage", Apple's PhotoKit may fetch a photo from iCloud on demand when you swipe or analyse it. This is a request to Apple's iCloud servers, not to ours. Verdict never has access to your iCloud credentials.
- Android: Verdict reads the photos and videos stored on your device through Android's MediaStore and makes no network request of its own.
Permissions Verdict requests
- iOS, Photo Library (read & write): required to display your photos, create the internal sorting albums, and trigger the iOS native deletion prompt.
- Android, Photos and videos (read): required to display the photos and videos on your device through MediaStore. Every deletion is confirmed by you in Android's own system dialog.
Verdict never reads any photo outside the scope you grant. That's the only permission. No microphone, camera, contacts, location, motion, calendar, or notifications.
Deletion
Nothing is deleted when you swipe. Photos you discard are only deleted after you confirm them from the Review screen, through your phone's system prompt.
- iOS: deleted photos go to "Recently Deleted" in the Photos app, where they stay recoverable for 30 days.
- Android: deletion goes through Android's system dialog. Depending on your device and gallery app, deleted items go to the system trash (bin), where they are generally recoverable for about 30 days.
Third-party services
None. Verdict ships with no third-party SDK: no analytics (Mixpanel, Amplitude, Firebase), no crash reporter (Sentry, Crashlytics), no advertising network, no attribution provider, no A/B testing platform, no customer support widget. Everything you see and do in the app is local code we wrote.
Children
Verdict is not directed at children under 13. Since we collect no data at all, COPPA compliance is automatic.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change Verdict's data practices (we don't plan to), we will update this page and bump the "Last updated" date. The previous version's wording remains in our git history.
